Why Should I go to the Women’s Rally in Annapolis?
Marissa Ingram
When it comes down to it, Maryland is an amazing place to live for a variety of reasons, including proximity to Washington, D.C. The Women’s March and National Women’s Day are just two of the major events that people from all over travel to D.C. for and since we live in Maryland, we only have to drive an hour or two to get there. Everybody wants to be a part of something big, but when it comes to our own state, a lot of us don’t see it as important to be there, especially because Maryland is relatively progressive. This progress didn’t happen on its own. People speaking out about issues and being the on the frontlines of change are integral to the progress Maryland has seen. On February 17th, 2020 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the Women’s Rally in Annapolis is going to take place near the Maryland Statehouse. This is a great opportunity to be involved in Maryland’s legislation and we hope you attend! If you’re still on the fence about it here are a few reasons you should think about going.
Get involved with your State! The legislation in Annapolis directly effects the Maryland population, and that means you! This year the rally is going to be centered around highlighting important legislation including and offering a common ground for legislatures and allies to discuss the progressive agenda that we have this year. Legislation includes that which promotes healthy families, reproductive justice, economic security, the rights of systems involving women and girls, and the prevention of gender violence and discrimination.
Show your support! The whole reason rallies exist are to raise awareness for a cause and to show others why they should care. The fun thing is that rallies are just the beginning of activism. In order for your message to get off the ground you need a group of people to listen and if we want reform to happen, it starts with the people that the reform would affect. We live in a government by the people, for the people so make sure your voice is being heard!
Make a difference! Not everyone that this legislation effects will be able to make the rally so be the voice for those who aren’t there. One voice can start a movement but it’s not a movement without other people to back it up. You can meet people that can relate to hardships you have faced, and make sure they know that they are not alone.
Learn something! A great way to learn about an issue you don’t fully understand is to find a way to educate yourself on the subject. Even if you’re only passionate about one of the issues on the agenda, you should still go! You have a chance to learn something about a challenge in someone else’s life that you don’t have to face in your regular day to day.
To be completely honest, the issues that are going to be addressed at the Women’s Rally pertain to everyone. You either know someone who is affected by this legislation, you are affected by it, or both! The Women’s Rally is February 17, 2020 from 7:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. near the Maryland Statehouse and we can’t wait to see you there!
